What a lineup last night for the City Winery show (songs of love and revolution). I was first up and for my last song I led everyone in singing “Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream” and I literally had chills throughout the whole song. Highlights for me: Garland Jeffreys was soulful and what a showman, and did a great version of Lou Reed’s “Waiting For My Man”; Dana Fuchs was amazing, especially “Across the Universe”. And then there was Bettye Lavette who gave the most moving, gut wrenching performance I’ve seen in a long time. I told her afterward she is a force of nature. And get this: she told me she loved my song “Ten Year Night” and wants me to send it to her, and then she said something like “but it would have to be from a not nice girl” and I said “Who said I was a nice girl?” Quite a night.
